Environmental Product Declaration Requests in One Click LCA

How One Click LCA facilitates setting and responding to EPD requirements

EPD Requests in One Click LCA

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a formal document that communicates the environmental impact and performance of a product. It includes for example the carbon footprint of the product in manufacturing and other life-cycle stages. An EPD conforms to international standards, and can used to demonstrate compliance, earn certification credits (for example for LEED and BREEAM) and compare product environmental performance. Many specifiers, investors and contractors make them requirements for product suppliers for significant product categories. They are also required for
regulatory compliance in some jurisdictions.

One Click LCA already includes nearly all publicly available EPDs globally, including EPDs published in these programs. EPD requests are issued when the required product has no EPD, or the EPD
parameters are not satisfying the requirements of the buyer or specifier (for example, it’s outdated). One Click LCA supports cooperation between specifiers and buyers and manufacturers:

  • Specifiers and buyers can issue ‘Request for an EPD from a manufacturer’. The request specifies if the buyer requires a third-party verified and published EPD, or are they requiring only for example a carbon footprint calculation or a so-called project EPD for this delivery.
  • Manufacturers can use One Click LCA’s Pre-Verified EPD Generator or EPD Flexible
tools to create the required data to satisfy the requirements seamlessly. Manufacturers can
also create their EPDs using other means and provide them to the specifier / buyer by email.

How to request for an EPD in One Click LCA

‘Request for an EPD from a manufacturer’ is a feature provided in One Click LCA building and
infrastructure licenses. Using the feature is included in the specified licenses. If you
have the license, you can access it from a Materials data input form under More Actions button. If
you have not done so already, create Company account or join the Company account for your
organisation to centralize data requests. Creating or joining a Company account happens under the
User menu.

Using this feature requires that you:

  • know the product you require an EPD for,
  • can estimate product demand in this project (to provide an incentive to answer),
  • can specify if the requirement is a mandatory condition,
  • can specify if you require a published and third party verified EPD, project EPD or carbon footprint and other requirements, and
  • have the email address to the appropriate contact person at the manufacturer. The summary of data you input is shown to you before your request is sent. You are automatically receiving a copy of the message.

If you do not already have access to this feature, and would like to use it, please contact us at sales@oneclicklca.com for more information.

How to respond to an EPD Request in One Click LCA

As a manufacturer, you will benefit commercially from being able to demonstrate and differentiate
with environmental performance of your products. EPDs are used to award certification credits, as
mandatory procurement requirements and as weighing criteria to choose products. An EPD you
create will be valid for five years, so you can use the data created for a longer time.

If you already have published EPDs for your products, One Click LCA already includes nearly all
publicly available EPDs globally, including EPDs published in these programs. You should only receive
requests for EPDs for products not already covered.

One Click LCA has several options for you to respond to the EPD requirement. If you already have the
EPD, you can simply email it to the person who made the request.

If you do not have the required documentation, one time and cost-efficient manner to develop the documentation is One Click LCA Pre-Verified EPD Generator which allows you to respond to the requirement and deliver results to the project seamlessly. It allows creating:

  • third-party verified and published EPDs according to ISO 14025, ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and
    EN 15804 / ISO 21930 for your product(s), and
  • self-declared project EPDs for your specific product(s) delivery for the project (same as
above, but the data remains private and does not undergo a third-party verification), and
self-declared carbon footprint calculations for your product(s).

To learn more about these options please contact us.
